The Marshfield Fair is open for another year of fun, food, animals, gardening and crafts. This year, they are adding honors for veterans through the Quilts of Valor program.

The Fair is full of the usual events, with something for everyone. For the agricultural minded, there is ox-pulling, poultry and dairy goat achievement and 4-H awards. For the gardeners, the Fair offers a Sunflower Show and Zinna contest and for those looking to tap their feet, there are different musical selections each day. To round out the activities, there is music of a different kind, including motocross, tractor pulls and the Demolition Derby. Of course, there are plenty of rides and all sorts of food.

On the second floor of Horticultural Hall is the section of the Fair for Arts and Crafts. This is a category for every handmade art form, including hooked rugs, sewn garments, knitting, photography, and many more. One of the largest displays is the quilt category. Quilters from all over the South Shore area enter their quilts to show off skills and teach the public about what it takes to make a quilt, a living art form. The colorful quilts line the ceiling area and are visible from every part of the room.

But there is a separate group of quilts that may not be noticed immediately. They surround a quilting table in the center of the room and are distinguished from the other quilts by their colors of only red, white and blue. These are the Quilts of Valor, a program started in 2003 by Catherine Roberts, whose son was deployed in Iraq at the time. From the Quilts of Valor (QOV) website:

*A Quilt of Valor® (QOV) is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand quilted. It is awarded to a member or veteran of the US Armed Services who has been touched by war. The Quilt says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.”*

*To use the term Quilt of Valor, Quilts of Valor or QOV, the quilt must be a specific size*[*,*](https://www.qovf.org/quilters-questions/basic-requirements/) *must have a label with required information, it must be awarded (it is not a gift) and it must be recorded.*

This year, the Marshfield Veterans Office worked with the Marshfield Fair and local quilt guilds to honor 19 veterans and thank them for their service. Co-coordinators Pam White, along with Laurel DeCastro, were approached by Janet Scribner, Vice President of the Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society and one of the directors for the Marshfield Fair. "Laurel DeCastro, my co-quilting supervisor, and I decided that we could do a presentation and tie it in with the theme of America's 250th. We approached the guilds last fall to ask if they would be interested in donating their talents for these quilts. We contacted the local guilds and asked them to make quilts and then worked with the Marshfield Veterans Affair office to give us names of recipients", said White. Ten quilt guilds and four individuals stepped up to the task, and "Sunday, August 30 will be the culmination of Laurel and I working together for over a year." There are now 19 veterans who will be thanked in a ceremony this Sunday, starting at 1pm, in the Horticultural Hall. "We are excited to honor our local veterans who served our country". All are welcome to attend the ceremony that will be on the second floor of the Horticultural Hall at the Fair.
