Before the pyrotechnics begin, town residents can enjoy music, food trucks, face painting, vendors selling their wares, nonprofit tables and more. This family-friendly event was started, and continues to run, on the energy of volunteers. Their efforts help raise the funds needed each year to treat Pembroke residents to a fireworks display and an evening of community fun. The event begins at 5 p.m. and runs until the fireworks have finished, usually around 7:45 p.m. Fireworks were part of Pembroke's 300th anniversary festivities in 2012\. Four years later, local Realtor Kathleen Keegan gathered some of her fellow Pembroke 300th Committee members and organized another fireworks event, thinking it would be "one and done." Little did she know it would become a Pembroke tradition to rival the Tree Lighting, another community event Keegan chaired for more than 20 years. Pembroke Celebrates is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to promote community ties. Planning for Pembroke Celebrates with Fireworks begins in late winter. The committee secures the location and necessary permits, books the fireworks company, food trucks and other vendors, reaches out to local businesses, and lines up entertainment for the event. Committee members also file safety plans, request police and fire department participation, plan the setup of the site, recruit volunteers for the day of the event and the following morning, and make sure all the details are in place for the fireworks display. The event has drawn more than 4,500 residents in past years, with families and friends gathering for an evening together. The company also specifies the safety procedures organizers must follow, including fencing off the practice field and maintaining a safe perimeter around the staging area. The Pembroke Police and Fire departments also participate in the event, helping to keep attendees safe and responding to any emergencies that may arise. This year, local band Mixtape Revival will provide music throughout the event, and the Pembroke High School band will perform before the fireworks begin. Food trucks and vendors will include Loco Larry Tacos, Great Grandma Flaherty, Jools Fried Dough, Kona Ice, Ellie's Sweet Treats, Heidi's Hollow and Big T Jerky House, along with the Pembroke High School concession stand. This year's celebration will also recognize two community partners that have supported Pembroke Celebrates for all 10 years: Tiny & Sons, owned by Peter Brown, and American Legion Post 146. Both have been Grand Finale sponsors since the event began, donating $1,000 each year toward the celebration. Pembroke Celebrates depend entirely on donations from the community, and that support is what allows the tradition to continue. "Fireworks alone cost $1,000 per minute, plus we pay police and fire personnel, school custodians, insurance, and there are many other costs," Keegan said. "We love celebrating with the town of Pembroke and think this kind of event is exactly what the community needs to come together," Keegan said.
