This week I had the opportunity to meet with the newly appointed Director of the Pembroke Council on Aging/Senior Services Kathryn Savage. She is very positive and enthusiastic and has a vision for enhancing the programs and services offered at Pembroke Senior Services.

Savage came to Pembroke from the Wellesley COA where she worked as assistant director and acting director over the past two years. Her early work history was predominately in the financial services sector. She became an “at home mom” when her children were young then returned to work with the Sharon and Brookline Housing Authorities for a number of years. While assisting with the care of her elderly parents she became interested in senior services and this led to her work at the Wellesley COA.

Savage has been in the director position for a few weeks but already has some ideas for Senior Services. She has a particular interest in affordable housing issues for seniors and plans to get involved with the Affordable Housing Committee. Wellesley COA provided a wide range of educational opportunities for seniors and she wants to bring more of that programming to Pembroke. These programs would include subjects like history, arts/culture, and current events to name a few. Programs that inform seniors about available resources in a variety of areas are planned. There will be an upcoming session with staff from the State ‘MassMoney” program to assist seniors with accessing funds that may be in old accounts that could exist.

Savage also envisions creating programs that will attract younger seniors and early retirees who may have the impression that Senior Services is just for folks who are much older. A survey is in the planning stages to get a better idea of the wants and needs of seniors in the town.

Savage made a commitment to send the Journal regular announcements of upcoming important programs that can be listed in the Calendar section of the paper.

Next week we will focus on our discussion with Nathan Zimmer, a social work intern from Bridgewater State University, who is providing services at the senior center for the next year.

Ken Pike, M.Ed, LCSW, is a lifelong licensed social worker and has worked as a certified SHINE counselor and outreach social worker assisting seniors with accessing a variety of needed resources and services over the past 10 years.
