Special Town Meeting will be called into session on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Pembroke High School auditorium. Residents will be asked to consider and vote on seven articles on the warrant. Article 4, which would amend the zoning bylaws covering battery storage, will have its own handout to explain the suggested changes.

The Select Board will be meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, before town meeting, to consider possible votes on the Town Manager review process and the South Shore Recycling Cooperative (SSRC) Hazardous Waste Depot intermunicipal agreement (IMA). Both were discussed at the Select Board's Oct. 7 meeting where it was decided to delay voting until Oct. 20. PCJ previously covered the IMA in last week's article. The meeting will be open to the public and will be held in the conference room outside the library at the high school.

William Galvin, secretary of the Commonwealth, calls Town Meeting "the purest form of democratic governing. In use for over 300 years and still today, it has proven to be a valuable means for many Massachusetts taxpayers to voice their opinions and directly effect change in their communities. Here in this ancient American assembly, you can make your voice heard as you and your neighbors decide the course of the government closest to you." Pembroke must have a quorum of at least 150 residents in order to hold town meeting. If that number is not met, no votes can be taken.

Town Moderator Steve Dodge noted, "Town meeting is the legislative body for our town. Citizens need to meet to set the tax rate, and to decide other questions that come before the town." He said he expects this meeting to be relatively short, because of the small warrant. If the quorum is met, the meeting will begin promptly at 7 p.m.

Residents are urged to arrive early to check in and have time to review the warrant.
