Readers of all ages are invited to participate in Pembroke Public Library’s 2026 Summer Reading Program, “Plant a Seed, Read!” Just as a farm grows food that nourishes our bodies, a library grows ideas that nourish our minds.
The 2026 Summer Reading Program will run from Monday, June 22 through Friday, August 28. Readers of all ages - from infants to adults - are encouraged to participate. The program is designed to keep readers engaged throughout the summer while offering fun activities, incentives, and special events.
For babies and pre-K patrons, we’re continuing the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Any child not yet in Kindergarten (even newborns!) can participate. 1,000 books may seem like a lot, but if you read just one book a night, you’ll meet your goal in less than three years. If you read three books a night, you could reach your goal in just one year!
For children ages 3-13, the Read and Bead Club is back! Kids read and record their minutes (or have a grown-up help them track time), then visit the library to turn those minutes into beads of varying colors, shapes, and designs. Each minute read counts towards a bead that kids can use to decorate and personalize their very own necklace. You can always trade beads in for different types later!
For teens ages 10-18, the Reading Dragons Club has landed once again. Teens can earn one set of Dragon Cards for every two hours they read. And this year, they can earn three LIMITED EDITION cards by completing challenges available at the Library. Challenge friends to Reading Dragon games, trade sets, or hoard your collection like a dragon! The Library has nine Dragon Card sets to earn this summer. Try to collect them all!
And Summer Reading isn’t just for kids. Adults can also track their reading to be automatically entered for bi-weekly prize drawings and a grand prize drawing at the end of the summer. Prizes this summer include gift cards to Gunther Tooties, That Bloomin' Place, Dairy Twist, A Fork in the Road, and a Kindle Fire HD8 Tablet.
To participate in any of our Summer Reading programs, visit the Library to register or sign up online. Then, read all summer long! There is no required reading and all genres and formats count (fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, magazines, ebooks, audiobooks, and more!). As you read, make sure to record your minutes, hours, or books to earn beads, Dragon Cards, or entries into the bi-weekly prize drawings.
