The Pembroke Recycling Committee was formed in 2011 when single-stream curbside recycling was implemented in the town. In 2019 the committee was tasked with evaluating the introduction of a dual-stream recycling program. Pembroke decided to continue with a single-stream program. Since then, the scope of the committee’s activities has expanded. At the 2023 annual town meeting, Pembroke voted to change the name to the Recycling and Sustainability Committee and dedicate its efforts to improve the town’s outreach and educational programs including waste reduction, recycling, water conservation, eco-friendly home and garden maintenance and efficiency tips.

The committee meets for an hour each month to discuss and plan social media outreach and events to promote proper recycling and sustainable practices in Pembroke. Members have hosted litter clean-up events, educational forums at the public library, and have a presence at town events such as the farmers’ market and Pembroke Community Day. The group explores ways to make recycling more approachable and fun for everyone.

There are multiple volunteer opportunities on the Pembroke Recycling and Sustainability Committee. We encourage anyone interested in recycling, composting and gardening, natural resource conservation, or any other environmental concerns to join this team effort to inform residents how to minimize waste for a cleaner, more beautiful Pembroke.

If you are interested in joining the committee, please complete the vacancy application and email it to the select board.
